The Google Books Ngram Viewer
This simple tool is sometimes used by scholars to track the frequency of words and expressions. http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/
For example, you could use it to track the frequency of certain words relating to digital media. The linguist Stephen Pinker uses it in this recent New York Times book review.

Archive.org - let's you view web sites from the past
The web archive, or way back machine (http://web.archive.org/) let's you enter a url and a date, and see what the web site looked like at a time in the past. This can be useful for examining changes to web sites over time. Former RWS511 students have used it to compare the way that presidential campaigns have changed their web sites in reaction to unfolding events but also to the potential of social media for political persuasion.
For example, consider Yahoo's 1996 web site, discussed by Clay Shirky in "Ontology is Overrated," http://web.archive.org/web/19961228024612/http://www4.yahoo.com/
